Measuring perceptions of criminal governance

The preparatory work of Secret Power develops the instruments needed to study how people understand and evaluate criminal authority across countries and contexts.

The Legitimacy of Secret Power (LSP) Scale measures individuals’ appraisals of criminal governance. Its page provides English, Italian and Japanese versions, identifies the short version, and links to the paper describing its development.

The Justification of Connivance Practices measure uses eight scenarios to examine how people evaluate practices of connivance with organised crime. English and Italian versions are available, with adaptations for Palermo and Catania.

Consult the measures overview, publications and open research resources for the existing instruments and supporting work.
